Bluebirds is a solo exhibition by Sofia Dobreva – Nolita, inspired by themes of the subconscious, loneliness, and belonging. In her working process, the artist plays with the idea of liberating one’s personal demons—exploring, understanding, and accepting them. The outcome is a kind of catharsis: capturing them on canvas as an act of reconciliation. But is peace possible, and how lasting can it be? Bluebirds is a visual journey into the deep blue of the human subconscious. As a chronic outsider, the artist takes stock of her inner fears and prejudices, confronting the question of how much of them is shaped by deeply rooted ideas about sex, gender, and origin. By examining her own demons, transforming them into painterly characters, and presenting them to a broad public, the artist aims to shed light on a person’s hidden life companions—their inner struggles and fears. Through contemporary art, she seeks to normalize the conversation about detoxing the psyche and sustaining its well-being. Sofia Dobreva – Nolita is a Bulgarian multidisciplinary artist living and working in Manchester, United Kingdom. Social justice and feminism are constant themes in her practice. Sofia works across painting, illustration, animation, and graphic design. She is guided by the idea of syncretism in art and draws inspiration from, and collaborates with, artists from the music and literary fields. In her painting practice, Sofia relies on the power of absolute color, bold volumes, and the reaching of global themes through intimate experiences.
