Dimitar Mitovski (b. 1964) is a Bulgarian director, producer, and visual artist. His creative journey began in the late 1980s and early 1990s within the context of the emerging contemporary art scene in Bulgaria. During this period, he participated in the activities of the Plovdiv-based group “Rab” (Edge) (1989–1993)—one of the key formations of early neoconventional art after 1989, associated with experimental practices in the fields of objects, installations, and performance. His works from this period are characterized by social and political sensitivity, the use of non-traditional materials, and a critical perspective on the imagery of the socialist past.
In 1995, he was among the participants in the artistic group “Disco 95,” which brought together authors from Plovdiv and Sofia and developed the experimental and interdisciplinary practices characteristic of the 1990s.
In the following years, Mitovski established himself as a director and producer, becoming one of the most recognizable names in Bulgarian cinema and television. His international recognition began in 2005 with the short film Get the Rabbit Back (co-directed with Kamen Kalev), selected for the “Critics’ Week” program at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by Rabbit Troubles (2007). In 2009, he directed the feature film Mission London, which became one of the most successful Bulgarian films after 1989, and in 2010, he created the series Undercover, distributed in over 180 territories worldwide.
Parallel to his work in cinema, Mitovski continues to develop his visual practice. His solo exhibitions include Dead End at ONE Monev Gallery, Sofia (2019) and Cosmic Noise at ONE Gallery, Sofia (2024). In the latter project, he explores the interaction between physical and digital art, integrating sound, objects, and NFT formats.
