Georgi Yankov is a great character. I take responsibility for the full ambiguity of this definition. When he is in the mood, he walks his Jack Russell Terrier as if it were a fairground bear. As proof, look at his ambiguous images shown in exhibitions. They are great images of a great meaning, grown because of its own contradiction. For example, wedging a single letter into the spelling of Exit and turning it into Exist is a reversal of meaning and its addition. Besides length, width, depth, and time, it is as if a fifth, additional dimension of meaning is activated in its ambiguity. Existence in a constant state of searching for an exit is problematic. Searching for entrances seems much more fulfilling to me, but not if your life choice is reduced to evacuation. We are urgently leaving the habitats of hope for a rational world shared with rational people. The evacuation plan offered by the author is pure imagination. The viewer is invited to imagine they have understood it, and how they act is their own business. The exhibition “Light Mayonnaise” at One Gallery by Georgi Yankov is an entrance-exit to a multidimensional world of large, dense, glowing images. They are oversized and over-potent because they contain fragments of a whimsical reality, formulas from the equation of life. They are signs that easily let us in, but once we understand the direction they point us in, they tighten like a vice. According to the “Theory of Relatively Light Mayonnaise,” nothing matters, but everything makes sense, or maybe it was that sense doesn’t matter, or it matters that there is no sense, or it doesn’t matter that there is sense… I have forgotten exactly how it is written, but you had better ask Prof. Georgi Yankov in person on February 11, after 1:00 PM at One Gallery on the corner of 14 Ivan Vazov St. and 6th September St.

About the author:
Georgi Yankov was born in Sofia in 1964. He graduated from the National Academy of Arts, majoring in “Poster” in 1990, and five years later was invited to be an assistant in the same major. Since 2003 he has been an associate professor, and since 2010 a professor of poster in the “Poster and Visual Communication” department. Since January 2020, he has been the Rector of the National Academy of Arts.
Yankov has worked in advertising for over twenty years and is the author of many advertising campaigns and videos. He also performs in various fields of visual arts – poster, graphic design, object, installation, and others. Member of the “Graphic Design” section of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA). Co-founder and chairman of New Vision International Group.
He has participated in numerous poster forums, including: International Triennial of Stage Poster – Sofia; International Biennial of Humor and Satire – Gabrovo; Exhibition on the occasion of Human Rights Day, Palace of Nations – Geneva; Exhibition of Bulgarian Poster – Basel; Participated together with Prof. Nikolay Mladenov in the “Poetry on a Wall” project – Embassy of Austria in Sofia. Other projects include: “Law and Justice” exhibition – Potsdam, Tunis, Munich, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Cultural Institute, London; “I Love This Movie” exhibition, Casa Del Cinema – Rome, So Independent – New York. Collateral event of the 56th Venice Biennale, Imago Mundi: Map of the New Art, Luciano Benetton Collection, Giorgio Cini Foundation – Venice, Grayscale – Serbia, Contemporary Bulgarian Humorous Poster – Austria.
He is the recipient of numerous graphic design awards and has had several solo exhibitions.
