"Under the Veil of Consciousness" is a solo exhibition-performance by Biliana Voutchkova, created as a site-specific presentation for ONE Gallery / Sofia. The exhibition includes partially composed, partially improvised music, performed live in symbiosis with various other means of expression - objects, video / audio installations and collages - used as "scores" for the overall composition. The main focus of the exhibition is the interactive connection between Biliana and the spectators, with her hands as a connecting link. She not only involves those present in the creation of the living score, but also uses the hands as means of further exploring one's own self. The theme of memory and recollection unites the installations, all of which have personal significance for the author. The simplicity of the materials (stone, glass, metal, fabric) and their messages provoke a deeper reading of the way we perceive art.

The hands confessions

primarily intuitive relationship, the first connection to the outside world, the most familiar memoir on the body, the lifelines that change with us throughout the intervening years, their relentless complex choreography leading to ever deeper levels of exploration

A choice of being elsewhere 
A site-specific live long durational installation-performance, a real time improvisation connoting to the presence of the audience / 2020 version (2018 first performance)

There will be violin, voice, performance, silence, memory snippets, new encounters, sudden bonds There will be unexpected forgotten ways of communication, abstract tender connections, familiar common sensations There will be imagery, surprise, resonance and echo, openness, a choice of being elsewhere

About the author:

​

Biliana Voutchkova is a dynamic and thoroughly engaged interdisciplinary artist with truly personal, unconventional artistic language. Through the prism of listening, her early training in classical music and the 25 years of development as contemporary artist-performer, she explores states of spontaneity and intuitive resonance embodied in her multifaceted activities. Her work spans the widest possible range of sound, vision, movement and includes long durational and multidisciplinary formats, concerts, performances, compositions and installations with focus on the sound space. 

Based between Berlin and her rural residency on the black sea coast of Bulgaria, she works as a soloist and with renowned ensembles such as United Berlin, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the Splitter Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Voutchkova/ Thieke duo etc. Among her recent/current projects are solo tours in France, Colombia, Chile, USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, her first solo exhibition-performance in One Gallery / Sofia, the development of new non-standard formats presented live and in various digital platforms (ESS Chicago / Option series, Kaleidophon Festival, Moers Festival), the release of her new solo album by the London based label Takuroku, the premieres of "Amati Lenta" (with Olivia Block) and "Golden Delusions" for One Dance Week festival in Plovdiv 2019. Biliana is the founder and curator of the DARA String Festival and a recent recipient of the Composition Stipend from the Berliner Senate, grands from INM/Berlin, Musikfonds and the Trust for Mutual Understanding/New York.
